​A top official at the U.S. Department of Justice has ordered federal prosecutors to drop charges against New York Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat who has cultivated a warm relationship with President Donald Trump.

In a two-page memo obtained by The Associated Press, acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, an alumnus of the Manhattan office that brought the case, said that the decision to dismiss the charges was reached without an assessment of the strength of the prosecution of the prosecution and was not meant to call into question the attorneys who filed the case.

​Mayor Eric Adams gathered his top commissioners and officials early Monday to give marching orders under the new administration: don’t criticize President Trump, don’t interfere with immigration enforcement and trust the mayor, multiple sources told THE CITY.

Adams scheduled the approximately hour-long meeting, which was held at the Municipal Building, late Friday, after days of confusion over guidance on what to do if Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrive at city buildings, including schools and hospitals.

​A political group that supports Donald Trump spent more than $40 million on legal costs in the first half of 2023 to defend the former president, his advisers and others, sources familiar with a filing detailing the costs confirmed to ABC News.

That number spent by the Save America leadership PAC, Trump's main fundraising arm, was first reported by The Washington Post.

The financial filing is expected to be released Monday.

The mounting costs come as Trump faces mounting legal troubles, including a superseding indictment handed up from a federal grand jury via special counsel Jack Smith's investigation into Trump's allegedly improper retention of classified documents after leaving office.
